The design of 53Ah VDA battery cell, a knock-out product of Wanxiang 123, has been successfully finished lately. The product has the following features: high energy density: the energy density of the product reaches near 260Wh/kg; high power: it is an energy battery cell product, and the normal temperature power: the output power density in 10 seconds reaches 1500W/kg; long cycle life: life cycle at high temperature reaches over 1,500 times; high safety: the product has successfully passed all the tests required by GBT-31485-2015, especially the EUCAR2 nail penetration test of USABC, making breakthrough in safety – no leakage, no smoke, no burning, and no explosion.
As the pure electric vehicle market is encouraged by government policies nowadays, the energy capacity of battery keeps improving. The danger that ineffective battery causes is even worse as a result. For example, the difficulty level of nail penetration may directly rise from EUCAR2 or EUCAR3 to EUCAR5. Although major battery enterprises have certain ways to improve nail penetration, they cannot take battery performance into account at the same time. Therefore, nail penetration is an insurmountable obstacle for most of the enterprises.
There’s no mandatory requirement of nail penetration test at present in China, but major engine plants in Europe and America, such as GM and Volkswagen, still carry out European and American safety standards in global projects, in which nail penetration is included as a mandatory test. For example, GM and Volkswagen is still adopting the nail penetration methods and standards of USABC at present. It’s clear that Chinese battery enterprises must be strict with themselves to pass nail penetration test. It is also the requirement of battery safety.
As a world-famous manufacturer of power battery for electric vehicle, Wanxiang 123 is always sticking to the product development theory of “safety first” and obeying strict product development standards. The technical evaluation strictly follows the requirement that nail penetration must meet the rigorous demands of USABC. By keeping in line with international standards, it has made breakthrough in battery safety.
